Former Teacher Faces Prison After Child With Student
A 36 year old former elementary school teacher in New Jersey has pleaded guilty in a case that has left many people stunned. Laura Caron admitted to endangering the welfare of a child after a relationship with a student that began when he was still a young boy. She later gave birth to a child fathered by him when he was just 13.
Under the plea deal she is looking at up to five years in state prison. She will also lose her teaching license for good and face other lasting restrictions.
The story first came to light years after the events when the boys father noticed a strong resemblance in a photo and reported it. Prosecutors say the contact started around the time the student was 11 and continued for several years while the boy and his siblings sometimes stayed at her home.
Even though the now adult former student has said he started the contact and wants the charges dropped the law still holds her responsible. Minors cannot give legal consent in these situations.
This case has sparked a lot of talk online about trust in schools and the protection of students. It serves as a hard reminder of how serious these breaches of trust can be.
