Dogs Can Smell Seizures Even Without Training

0Points

Dogs may already know when a seizure is happening just by the smell

A fresh study looked at 30 everyday pets that had never been trained for medical work. Researchers gave them sweat samples from a young girl with epilepsy, some taken during a seizure and some not. Nearly half the dogs went straight to the seizure sample first, more than you would expect by pure chance.

This suggests the scent of a seizure stands out enough that many dogs notice it on their own. Earlier work showed trained dogs can pick it up reliably. Now it looks like the ability might be more natural than we thought.

Imagine what that could mean for people living with epilepsy. A regular family dog might one day help give a heads up or offer comfort simply because it notices something different in the air. More research is still needed, but the early signs are pretty exciting.
